Question about jobs women's jobs...?

I would like to pose a question about something that has bothered me for some time. There are a number of jobs--jobs typically held by women--that tend to be low on the pay scale. E.g. teaching, childcare, social work, MR services. When people remark that these jobs are underpaid, others often say "but you should do it because you love it, not for the money."

Why is it that jobs that are typically held by women pay so much less, and that passion, not money, is considered an adequate reward for some of the hardest jobs out there? Certainly, these jobs offer many rewards, but also many stresses, high case loads, large classrooms, burnout, etc. Of course, one can choose a different profession, but *someone* has to teach our children, offer daycare, etc. If someone is passionate about being a stockbroker or banker, does that mean that the job shouldn't pay well?

This isn't my first post about salary but I guess this is something that interests me. Just wondering people's thoughts.

Question about jobs women's jobs...?
It is a multidimensional answer from my perspective.

1) We live in a capitalistic world and those jobs that are more closely related to the development of monetary wealth are more valued

2) We live in a sexist world and men have dominated the work world for centuries which leads both to valuing more of what they have valued (capitalism) and to recruit and support other men coming into the profession (the glass ceiling still exists).

3) We as a society have mixed feelings and attitudes toward society's role and goals in respect to social or common good...and those areas you have identified are all related to social or common good. We want to help those in need; but only if we remain in control and/or the people we serve are deserving. The mixed feelings society as a whole has results in not wanting to contribute what the service really should cost.

4) Private vs. public service. Closely related to the last point and the first is our current obsession with privatization (in CA we are now looking at privatizing the lottery). Most of the professions you mention are public. We can see where those that are private sometimes pay more (this is most clear in the military - the private military in IRAQ makes many times more than the public military doing the same work. We see this in human services and in some cases education.
